Jacksonville Beach boaters can launch from the Mike McCue Boat Ramp again starting Friday, Sept. 4, after a seven-month closure for bulkhead construction.
JaxParks announced Thursday, Sept. 3, that crews finished the new bulkhead at the ramp, located at 2510 2nd Ave. N. The reopening falls on 904 Day, the annual celebration tied to the Jacksonville area code that encourages residents to support local businesses and explore Northeast Florida.
The ramp closed Feb. 9 so crews could build the new bulkhead to protect and improve the waterfront. Action News Jax reported that city officials described the work as part of a larger effort to upgrade Jacksonville's waterfront infrastructure.
During the closure, JaxParks directed boaters to three alternative launches: Oak Harbor Boat Ramp, Mayport Boat Ramp and Palm Valley Boat Ramp.
The ramp sits inside Mike McCue Memorial Park, named for a Jacksonville Beach native who served as a first responder with Jacksonville Fire & Rescue, according to a 2024 First Coast Life profile. After McCue's death, friend Danny Fulmer, CEO of Fultech Audio/Video, led a community effort to transform the boat ramp area into a memorial park. The city agreed.
"It was an effort way bigger than just myself," Fulmer said in the April 2024 profile. He said he worked with Anson Dewolf, Kevin Patton and Bill Wilber to sell personalized pavers to raise money to beautify the park and modernize public areas.
The city's parks page lists the park as open 24/7 with amenities including a nonmotorized launch, picnic shelters, a restaurant and restrooms. No project cost or contractor details have been released.
Jacksonville Beaches News reported Aug. 30 that the park was "close to its Grand Opening Day," with video captured by Mike Luke of Ground Up Photography LLC.
