The Duval County Council of PTAs and PTSAs wants Beaches families to vote yes on a one-mill property tax renewal for Duval County Public Schools.

The DCCPTA says the measure will appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot. If approved, the district estimates it would generate about $121 million a year for four more years, according to an October newsletter from the organization's president.

The measure would continue the existing one-mill property tax approved by Duval County voters in 2022 rather than impose a new one-mill levy.

The levy funds "teachers and staff, school safety, academics, arts, athletics, and student activities," the president wrote. The DCCPTA called on families to learn about the measure and remind neighbors to vote.

The levy is countywide, meaning DCPS schools across the district would continue to receive funding. That includes Beaches-area schools such as Fletcher High School, Fletcher Middle School and Mayport Coastal Sciences Middle School.

What the money pays for

The Duval County School Board voted 6-1 on March 3 to send the renewal resolution to the Jacksonville City Council for placement on the November ballot, as first reported by News4Jax. Board Chair Charlotte Joyce cast the lone "no" vote, saying she wanted to cut the proposed millage to a half-mill.

The Jacksonville City Council later approved placing the measure on the Nov. 3 ballot in a 15-0 vote on June 9.

According to DCPS, roughly $62 million of the annual revenue would go toward teacher salary supplements ranging from $7,730 to $9,370, depending on salary band. Another $12 million would support arts and athletics, funding items such as band uniforms, lighting and sound upgrades, turf fields and scoreboards.

The one-mill levy was first approved by Duval County voters in 2022.

"When we are sitting here tonight … we need to make sure we are fiscally responsible with the people in this building," board member April Carney said at the March 3 meeting, as reported by News4Jax.
