A man was fatally stabbed beneath the Jacksonville Beach Pier on Thursday night, and a 60-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, according to the Jacksonville Beach Police Department.
Officers responded to a reported disturbance near the pier at approximately 9:50 p.m. on Aug. 20, according to News4Jax. When they arrived, they found a man dead beneath the pier from stab wounds.
Police took the suspect into custody and filed a first-degree murder charge, First Coast News reported.
Jacksonville Beach police said the victim has been identified, according to News4Jax reporting, though the victim's name had not been publicly confirmed as of Friday, Aug. 21. The suspect's name also had not been released in available reports.
A witness told Action News Jax they saw a knife at the scene and recalled discovering the man stabbed to death underneath the pier Thursday night.
The pier sits at the east end of Beach Boulevard and draws heavy foot traffic from residents and visitors year-round. The area beneath the pier is accessible from the beach and is frequented by pedestrians, anglers and people sheltering from the elements.
Police have not released information about a possible motive or whether the suspect and victim knew each other. No arraignment date or next court appearance for the suspect has been announced.
