At least six people were displaced after a fire swept through a mixed-use building in Jacksonville Beach on Sunday, Oct. 4.
No one was injured, Action News Jax reported. Black Label Tattoo owner Charles McNinch lost two cats and a bird in the fire.
The blaze broke out around 3:30 p.m. at a building near 3rd Street South and 6th Avenue South. The structure housed a smoke shop on the first floor, Black Label Tattoo on the second floor and three apartments.
A large fire-rescue response blocked all southbound lanes of 3rd Street South, First Coast News reported.
Residents and customers escape
Resident Stacy Rogers told Action News Jax that her husband discovered the fire while taking out the trash after the couple noticed a popping sound and an electrical smell.
Rogers said her daughter and two granddaughters, ages 3 and 7, were upstairs in an apartment at the time. Her husband ran to the tattoo shop and banged on the door to warn at least four customers inside.
Rogers told the station she believes faulty wiring caused the fire, but Action News Jax said it could not independently confirm the cause with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
Cause remains under investigation
Rogers also alleged that the building's units did not have smoke detectors.
"We've complained, we've done everything. No smoke detectors in any of the places," Rogers said.
She said she and her husband had been looking to move for six months. Action News Jax reported that it was unable to reach the property owner for comment.
First Coast News said it contacted Jacksonville Fire and Rescue but did not immediately receive a response.
The official cause of the fire had not been released as of Monday, Oct. 5.
